UMNO and postal votes

Okay, so the other day I blogged about how the Bagan Pinang by-election will go UMNO's way because of the Indian votes whose membership figures were pumped up by the various pro-UMNO Indian based parties. However, on a serious note, there is every likelihood that Mohd Isa Samad will still emerge a winner because of that dreadful thing called, POSTAL VOTES! Knowing that they could not rely on the support from the ordinary rakyat anymore, despite all the racial and religious rhetorics, this is one card left for them to play. In fact, that guy Zahid even proposed an army camp to be built in every parliamentary constituency. Try to imagine one right in the middle of Damansara Jaya. Two issues about the postal votes in Bagan Pinang have been raised. According to PAS' findings, 70% of the near 4,000 military personnel registered in BP camp have since left the service and therefore, should be voting as normal citizens. The second one is, all family members of the enlisted men are non-military personnel, and again, should be voting as normal citizens. Blogger, Tulang Besi, also wrote on the subject.

I was approached by an acquaintance. She has known me for more than a year now, but we have never talked before. But this time, she felt that she had to have a long talk with me.

She told me that she was once entrusted to vote on behalf of troops going on service during the 1990 General Elections. She was told to vote BN for 80% of the votes and the rest is up to her.

She did her job well and as a result BN won all seats with high percentage of postal votes in Malaysia during the 1990 elections. She felt that she had to tell me for it has been a secret she has kept all this while. I asked her to come clean and make public of what she has done. She replied, she cannot because she is now working for a company linked to the ATM. She might put her job in jeapordy especially when jobs are hard to find nowadays.

However, as Harakahdaily had reported below, there are ex military personell who dares to expose the truth. Such as Sargent Abu Kassim who met with the Chairman of the Election Commission and exposed what he had done before.

Firstly, we must give thanks to Retired Sargent Abu Kassim’s bravery for exposing such corruption. Secondly, I doubt that the EC will do anything to remedy this situation.

My own information tells me that all postal votes will be delivered to PWTC on every General Election day where they will then be distributed according to UMNO’s whims and fancies. That explains why Abdullah Badawi’s majority would have been just 1k+ but suddenly added by a round number of 10,000 votes on the day of the election.

Postal votes have come to save UMNO so many times. It has saved UMNO/BN all over Malaysia especially in Sabah and Sarawak. It has become UMNO’s main source of definite vote bank. It is untransparent, dubious and almost always one sided in terms of result.

And, why is it that postal votes should cover family members of serving military personel? Aren’t the family members of military personell considered to be civilians? Why can’t they come out from the camp and vote like any other people?

Why is it that members of the military service cannot be allowed to vote like ordinary citizens? Are to we to assume that all military personell are on duty on election day?

It’s clear that UMNO will be using Postal Votes to the maximum since Zahid Hamidi is proposing to set up Territorial Army (TA) camps in every Parliamentary area. I mean, why do we need TA regiments in every Parliamentary areas? Some Parliamentary areas do not even have space for a camp i.e. PJ Utara, PJ Selatan, Bukit Bintang, Seputeh, Ipoh Barat, Ipoh Timur etc.

Some of these areas makes no sense to have their own TA? In built-up areas (FIBUA), regular armies makes the best defenders because the complexities of built-up areas defence is known to any army strategist. Why have TA in urban Parliamentary seats?
Also, why do we need to have TA in every Parliamentary areas? It just doesn’t make sense from a logistical or strategic perspective. Not to mention it’s not economical.

Defence should be planned according to terrain, easiness to gain supply etc. Not according to parliamentary districts because that’s not how enemy troops will advance. The enemy will never advance in accordance to our own parliamentary districts.

We will see in the next General Election, on the night of the election, dubious bags of votes will arrive at all counting stations changing the result of the election in favor of BN. These votes will be justified by the existence of various TA camps in all Parliamentary areas.

The Zahid Hamidi plan will be put into motion should the BN re-capture Bagan Pinang with unequivocal majority. To me, Bagan Pinang will be a case to convince top echelon of UMNO that the future of UMNO lies in Postal Votes.

Nizar, the crowd puller

Hundreds of Bagan Pinang residents celebrated the mid-autumn festival with Pakatan Rakyat (PR) leaders as the federal opposition launched its first nightly ceramah in its by-election campaign for the state seat.

The celebration was held at the Chinese-dominated town of Batu 9 here, amid a racially-motivated campaign against the coalition which saw the distribution of books accusing PR of sidelining the Malay community.

Negri Sembilan DAP chief Loke Siew Fook told the audience the significance of the celebration also known as the mooncake festival, which commemorates the uprising of the people of China against the Yuan Dynasty in the 14th century.


He urged all the voters to stand up against what he called Barisan Nasional’s (BN) hypocrisy, accusing the ruling party of doublespeak.

The crowd puller for the night was ousted Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Nizar Jamalluddin.

“Tonight we celebrate the lantern festival to prepare for the fall of Barisan Nasional not only in Negri Sembilan, but throughout Malaysia,” said Nizar to loud cheers from the crowd.

“The Yuan Dynasty was tyrannical, but the Barisan Nasional is worse than them, they denied the right of the people of Perak and then they wanted to do the same in Selangor,” he added.

The Bukit Gantang MP, who became popular with the Chinese community after he was sworn in as the Perak mentri besar, also entertained the crowd by singing a Teresa Teng song “The Moon Represents My Heart”.

PAS candidate Zulkefly Omar was also present to appeal to the mainly Chinese crowd to continue backing the Islamist party.

He later joined all PR leaders in cutting the mooncakes and distributing balloons to the children who attended the celebration. Zulkefly is facing Umno strongman Tan Sri Mohd Isa Abdul Samad in the by-election that is expected to end PR’s winning streak in all elections in the peninsula since last year.

Isa, who was the Negri Sembilan mentri besar for 22 years until 2004, remains a popular figure among the Malays in the Bagan Pinang constituency.

PR however controls the more mixed neighbouring constituencies of Lukut, Port Dickson and Chuah.

How low can you go?

Even before the by-election campaign in Bagan Pinang could take off, the smear campaign towards Pakatan Rakyat took off in earnest when two books were found on each car windscreen at the 7th mile near Port Dickson. One book, entitled “Wajah Sebenar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim: Nasib Orang Melayu Selangor” (The Real Face of Tan Sri Ibrahim: The Plight of the Selangor Malays), accused the Selangor mentri besar of sidelining the Malay community in the state.

Of course many of the issues raised in the books could be considered pretty hollow as they have been brought up before in past by-elections, or even by the UMNO mouth-piece, Utusan. But then again, when a by-election that involves a former MB as its candidate is at stake, I guess someone would be desperate enough to resort to such tactics. Some of the issues mentioned are:

“They wanted People Supremacy so much after they were fooled by Pakatan Rakyat, and were willing to risk the future of their children” . [Our children's future has long since been compromised or didn't they know that. How else can you explain Hishamuddin and the likes of him in UMNO sending their kids to other countries for their higher education?]

“After ruling the state for 16 months, Pakatan Rakyat led by Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim has done a lot of things that have disadvantaged the Malays and Islam ” it adds citing, among other things, Selangor's proposal to hold elections for local councils. [Is that so bad to have elections for local councils? If it is so, then we might well do away with the general elections, the Bagan Pinang by-election and all other elections].

“If this happens almost all local councils will be controlled by the Chinese because they live in towns while the Malays live in villages,” [Er, the writer forgot about Malays living in Bukit Tunku, Damansara, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Mont Kiara, Putra Jaya and Sri Hartamas, to name a few].

The cowardly act of these people is that they dare not even print the name of the author or the publisher on the books. They even alleged that PAS has become a puppet to the Chinese in DAP and PKR. [To put it simply, these fellas just don't understand the concept of consensus-building because they are so used to bullying the other component parties in the BN]..

Since they could not come up with any new issues, they resorted to recycling photos of Elizabeth Wong as well [As though anybody cared! A bunch of perverts, that's what they are.]

In the book about Anwar, one line read : “Anwar accused the NEP as unfair for sidelining the Chinese and the Indians, which means he is not happy to see the Malays becoming as successful as the Chinese,” [*sic*]

Despite all these, that partyless cow head Murugiah has the audacity to issue warnings to the opposition not to raise the Shah Alam cow head issue during the campaign. This also include the ban on the use of the word "Altantuya". How much more democratic can you get? But knowing how creative the opposition is [always thinking outside the box], I believe they can overcome this constraint.

The numbers just don't add up

The say in politics, the larger the number you have, the better the chances you have in winning an election. As every one knows by now, the Indians have suddenly become the king maker in the Bagan Pinang by-election and all the pro-BN Indian based parties have started to lay claim that they have the numbers to deliver for UMNO, or is it? Numbers can also be deceiving if you know how to add. This was what was exposed in Jeff Ooi's recent write-up in his blog.

Poll strategists say the numbers must add up in planning for a battle... any battle

So I took a look at the winning chances for PR-PAS in the forthcoming by-election in Bagan Pinang.

Apart from the task to win over the 30% postal voters in the Army Town, we have to battle in wooing the 2,800 Indian voters too.

Facing off the pro-BN Indian clusters gathered from stats published in the Press, PR-PAS will be doomed:

MIC members: 2.5 million
M Kayveas' PPP: 1.5 million
T Murugiah's PPP: 157,231
IPF: 320,245
Makkal Sakti Party: 2.1 million
P Uthayakumar's Human Rights Party: 1.5 million
Hindraf supporters: 2.2 million
KS Nallakaruppan's MIUP: 250,782
Kimma: 300,057

If you add them up, wow! There would be 9.5 million pro-BN Indian supporters - which add up to about 40% of the national population of 25 million [phew!] - ready to be mobilised in Bagan Pinang, or in the next general election.

In what language do we teach our kids Maths and Science nowadays, I wonder?
