Marina speaks up for Ambiga

Social activist Marina Mahathir today took a swipe at Bersih 2.0 chief S Ambiga's detractors, saying that personal attacks against the latter only show their immaturity.

NONEMarina (right), the daughter of former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, said the many attacks against Ambiga were shocking as it appeared as if Bersih 2.0's opponents are incapable of holding a proper debate.

“I am very concerned and upset over the personal attacks on Ambiga. It speaks of those who are against Bersih, (and) how shallow their arguments (are).

“This reflects badly on how they're brought up,” she said at a press conference today.

Marina avoided naming individuals in her scathing rebuke, though among the most recent attacks on Ambiga's character came from Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and Election Commission deputy chief Wan Ahmad Wan Omar.

Najib last weekend accused Ambiga of plotting to sabotage the BN-led government's efforts to peacefully build the nation and its economy, saying she aims “to ruin all this”.

Wan Ahmad meanwhile called Ambiga a Pakatan Rakyat stooge who is merely being used to further the opposition coalition's ambitions of power.

Marina stressed that instead of demonising and calling people names, it would be more productive to focus on the facts and issues surrounding Bersih 2.0 and its demands.

'What's to be afraid of T-shirts?'

Marina also slammed the on-going crackdown on supporters of the movement calling for free and fair elections, saying it is an act done out of fear.

NONE“Only people who are afraid will arrest people wearing T-shirts. Ask the people, if they see Bersih on a shirt, will it make them want to riot?

“There have been worse words written on T-shirts, but none of it has made us smoke ganja or do all sorts of things... If we are really afraid of words, then we are really third world or less,” she said.

Marina questioned why the authorities insist on benchmarking the country's civil society movement with third world countries, when Malaysia brands itself as being closer to the level of developed countries.

“Our standards should be higher... We should have more faith in ourselves, in our people,” she said.

She however refused to compare the ongoing crackdown with the controversial Ops Lalang launched during her father's tenure as premier, when nearly 200 dissenters were arrested under the draconian internal security act (ISA).

She insisted that it is unfair to draw parallels between the two, briefly pointing out that the circumstances are different.

“Were people arrested for T-shirts (during Ops Lalang)? No? There you have it,” she said, declining to speak further on the issue.

Such display of arrogance by Ali Rustam

When I read the news report that Ali Rustam has demanded that Amiga Sreenevasan be stripped off her citizenship, the one thing that came to my mind was, "This fella must be out of his rockers." For heaven's sake, this guy is the Chief Minister of Malacca and by the mere fact he is holding such an esteem position in the state, he must have known some thing about our Federal Constitution especially the part that relates to citizenship. Maybe the following will enlighten him:

Article 9 of the Malaysian Federal Consitution states : (1) No citizen shall be banished or excluded from the Federation. (2) Subject to Clause (3) and to any law relating to the security of the Federation or any part thereof, public order, public health, or the punishment of offenders, every citizen has the right to move freely throughout the Federation and to reside in any part thereof (3) So long as under this Constitution any other State is in a special position as compared with the States of Malaya, Parliament may by law impose restrictions, as between that State and other States, on the rights conferred by Clause (2) in respect of movement and residence.

By even suggesting such a move on Amiga, it clearly shows that some of the UMNO leaders have not learnt from the 2008 GE on being humble. With such display of arrogance, how can he expect us to vote for him come GE13?

There are also times when I get the feeling that Daffy Duck pales in comparison with
these blokes.

BERSIH 2.0 - The King steps in

Istana Negara tonight issued a special statement by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin on the planned rally by Bersih.

Below is the translated full text of the king's statement fromBernama.

"I am following closely the developments of the proposed gathering and procession by Bersih with the aim of handing over a memorandum to me as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, and how the government, particularly the agencies and departments concerned, is handling the issue.

"However, I believe that the nation's leadership under Najib Abdul Razak is capable of handling this problem in the best possible way.

"I urge that amid the political fervour of a section of the people to bolster democracy in our country, it must also be ensured that this demand on democracy does not bring destruction to the country.

"Generally, we cannot be following too much the practices in other countries, as harmony and stability are vital foundations for a country and which all quarters must protect.

"I also urge the government to carry out everything that is entrusted to it by the people in a just and wise manner, and it is important that I, as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, do not want to see this country with a plural society in a situation where there is animosity among them or a section of the people being enemies with the government, on whatever grounds.

"When any problem arises, we as a civilised society must resolve it through consultations and not follow our emotions, as the Malay saying goes, 'Yang Dikejar Tak Dapat Yang Dikendong Berciciran'” (Not getting what we chase after and spilling what we carry).

"The fact is, street demonstrations bring more harm than good although the original intention is good. Instead, we should focus on our main objective to develop this country, and not create problems that will cause the country to lag behind.

"Remember that there is no land where the rain does not fall, there is no ocean that is not turbulent. That is how important moderation and compromise is, which has been long been in practice by our nation's administration."

Bersih to hold press conference tomorrow In an immediate reaction, Bersih chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan indicated the possibility of a change to the situation involving the polls watchdog's planned rally on July 9 following Agong's statement late tonight. "Things may change now with what the king said. We are discussing it now," she said in a short message reply. She may provide further details at a press conference scheduled for tomorrow. Ambiga also denied that she had been arrested along with committee member Maria Chin and PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu, but she confirmed hearing such rumours.

Monday Humour

A beggar said to another beggar: "I had a grand dinner yesterday."

"How?": The other beggar asked.

First beggar: Someone gave me a RM100 note yesterday. I went to the
KL Tower RevolvingRestaurant and ordered wine & dinner worth RM 1,000, and enjoyed the dinner. When the bill came, I said, I had no money.

The manager called the policeman, and handed me over to him.

I gave the RM100 note to the police fellow, and he set me free.
Isn't that a wonderful example of financial management?

˜Today we are spending 5 times more money in medications for male virility and
female silicone than in finding a cure for Alzheimer's. In a few years, we will
have old women with big breasts and men with hard penises but they won remember their
use."

A man is! taking a walk in Central park in New York . Suddenly he sees a

He runs over and starts fighting with the dog. He succeeds in killing the

A policeman who was watching the scene walks over and says: 'You are a

Oh then it will say in newspapers in the morning:

The T-shirt double standard

The above shows Dr Lee Boon Chye (a cardiologist), MP for Gopeng being arrested while going about his shopping activities at a wet market in Ipoh recently. Notice that there is no "BERSIH 2.0" printed on the T-shirt, and yet he was arrested in full view of the public.

But wearing this T-shirt in a mosque is permissable.

BERSIH 2.0 - He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother

The road is long
With many a winding turn
That leads us to who knows where
Who knows where
But I'm strong
Strong enough to carry him
He ain't heavy, he's my brother

So on we go
His welfare is my concern
No burden is he to bear
We'll get there
For I know
He would not encumber me
He ain't heavy, he's my brother

If I'm laden at all
I'm laden with sadness
That everyone's heart
Isn't filled with the gladness
Of love for one another

It's a long, long road
From which there is no return
While we're on the way to there
Why not share
And the load
Doesn't weigh me down at all
He ain't heavy, he's my brother

He's my brother
He ain't heavy, he's my brother...

Uh Oh, yet another 'YELLOW' song
